Learn why core aeration and overseeding are essential, and necessary, for a healthy and greener lawn.
Why core aeration is essential
Revitalize your lawn’s health
Core aeration is crucial for maintaining a vibrant and healthy lawn, especially in Jefferson County, MO, where clay soil is prevalent.
Soil tends to compact easily, restricting water, nutrients, and air from reaching the grass roots.
By removing small plugs of soil, core aeration alleviates this compaction, promoting deeper root growth and enhancing soil structure.
Boost nutrient absorption
Aeration opens up the soil, allowing essential nutrients to penetrate deeper into the root zone.
This process not only improves the grass’s access to nutrients but also enhances water infiltration, ensuring your lawn stays lush and green throughout the seasons.
Enhance soil structure
Core aeration reduces soil compaction, improving the soil’s ability to support healthy root growth. This process creates channels for air, water, and nutrients, leading to a stronger, more resilient lawn.
We recommend lawn core aeration every Spring and Fall
Why overseeding matters
Thicken your lawn
Overseeding is the process of planting new grass seed directly into existing turf without tearing up the soil. This practice is particularly beneficial for lawns after core aeration, as it helps fill in bare spots, enhance grass density, and improve the overall appearance of your lawn.
Boost nutrient absorption
By overseeding, you introduce new, resilient grass varieties that are better adapted to withstand diseases, pests, and extreme weather conditions. This diversity makes your lawn more robust and less susceptible to seasonal stresses.
Enhance soil structure
Overseeding in the fall and spring helps ensure a thick, green lawn all year round. The new grass plants will establish strong root systems before winter, making your lawn more vibrant and healthier in the growing season.
We recommend over-seeding every Spring and Fall season after aeration
Frequently Asked Questions
New customers can expect to receive onboarding materials in an email when booking services with us, which will include specific FAQs and preparation around our services.
Core Aeration FAQs
-
It is recommended to aerate your lawn twice a year, typically in the spring and fall when the grass is actively growing.
-
Signs include thin or patchy grass, compacted soil, water pooling on the surface, heavy foot traffic areas, and excessive thatch buildup (a layer of organic matter between the grass and the soil).
-
Mow your lawn to a low height and water it a day or two before the scheduled aeration to ensure the soil is moist but not soggy. This makes it easier for the aeration machine to penetrate the soil.
-
The soil plugs left on your lawn after aeration will break down and decompose naturally, returning valuable nutrients to the soil. You can also break them up by mowing or watering.
-
While DIY aeration is possible with rented equipment, our aeration ensures the job is done correctly and efficiently with specialized equipment and expertise.
-
When done properly, aeration will not damage your lawn. It is a beneficial process that promotes long-term lawn health, though you may see small holes and soil plugs immediately after the service.
Overseeding FAQs
-
The best time to overseed is during the growing season for your grass type. It is recommended to over-seeding twice a year, once in the Fall and once in the Spring.
-
Mow your lawn to a lower height and remove any debris. It’s also beneficial to aerate your lawn before overseeding to ensure better seed-to-soil contact.
-
Keep the soil consistently moist by watering lightly but frequently. Avoid heavy foot traffic on the newly seeded areas and refrain from mowing until the new grass reaches about 3 inches in height.
-
Germination times vary depending on the grass type and weather conditions, but you can generally expect to see new grass sprouts within 7 to 21 days. However, depending on weather conditions or soil health, there is no guaranteed timeframe of growth or even if seed will germinate.
-
Yes, overseeding is often combined with aeration for optimal results, as the aeration process helps to create the perfect environment for new seeds to take root.
-
Overseeding can improve most lawns, but it’s essential to choose the right grass seed for your climate and soil conditions to ensure success.
We use a premium tall-fescue seed that is bred to withstand the harsh winters and intense heats of mid-Missouri when over-seeding.
